| Plot Summary: |
As the film opens on an Oklahoma farm during the depression, two simultaneous visitors literally hit the Wagoneer home: a ruinous dust storm and a convertible crazily driven by Red, the missus' brother. A roguish country-western musician, he has just been invited to audition for the Grand Ole Opry, his chance of a lifetime to become a success. However, this is way back in Nashville, Red clearly drives terribly, and he's broke and sick with tuberculosis to boot. Whit, 14, seeing his own chance of a lifetime to avoid "growing up to be a cotton picker all my life," begs Ma to let him go with Uncle Red as driver and protege. Thus begins a picaresque journey both hilarious and poignant.
Reviewer description: Clint Eastwood's HONKYTONK MAN is certainly one of the actor-director's gentler works. The low-key period film takes place during the depression, with Eastwood starring as Red Stovall, a struggling country singer on the verge of his big break. Red's been invited to audition for the Grand Ole Opry, but as the film opens, he's a long way from success. He shows up at his sister's Oklahoma home drunk, in a stolen car, and suffering from tuberculosis. His sister ends up sending her son, Whit (Kyle Eastwood), along with Red to Nashville to make sure he gets to his audition in one piece. The interaction between Red and his 14-year-old nephew is the focus of the film. Eastwood again plays a rather unreliable type. Red is a bit of a scoundrel, and he and Whit get into quite a bit of trouble on their way to Tennessee, as Red's health deteriorates. At one point, they pick up a teenage prostitute (Alexa Kenin) who begs them to take her along to Nashville so she can pursue a singing career. Eastwood's film captures the period and the desperate straits of his characters perfectly while maintaining a light and humorous tone.
Weakened from a life in the bottle, a faded honkytonk singer finally receives a chance to audition for the Grand Ole Opry. Relatives charge his teenage nephew with the task of making sure the singer makes it there in one piece. As the singer languishes, the boy matures quickly on the road.
The film was shot in Birds Landing, California.
Kyle Eastwood is Clint Eastwood's son. HONKYTONK MAN was his first major film role. He now makes his living as a jazz musician.
Eastwood originally asked James Stewart to play the part of Grandpa (John McIntire), but Stewart said he was not ready to play a grandfather.
In a profile of Eastwood, Norman Mailer said of HONKYTONK MAN, "It was one of the saddest movies seen in a long time, yet on reflection, terrific. One felt a tenderness for America while looking at it."
Composer Steve Dorff, who also composed the score for BRONCO BILLY, is the father of actor Stephen Dorff.
Country legend Marty Robbins, who plays Smoky, died shortly after completing the film.
Actress Alexa Kenin, who plays Marlene, was murdered in 1985. The film PRETTY IN PINK, in which she also appeared, was dedicated to her memory.
